Editorial: BSkyB is not out of the woods yet

Few will have been surprised by the media regulator's ruling that BSkyB is "a fit and proper company to hold a broadcasting licence". Through all the evidence heard about the press and illegal phone-hacking, nothing emerged to suggest any crossover of the scandal into BSkyB.

This does not mean, though, that the TV company should be considered out of the woods. Ofcom was highly critical of James Murdoch's performance at News International. Police investigations into phone-hacking and illegal payments are not over, and although Mr Murdoch resigned as chairman of BSkyB in April, he remains, a non-executive director.

Ofcom must stand ready to reopen its review, if new evidence becomes available.
