"Felix Baumgartner's 23-mile free-fall was an awesome leap," writes Emma O'Conner in Time magazine, "but the record he broke had stood for 52 years - a feat in itself."

The original record-holder, US Air Force Colonel Joseph Kittinger is among the daredevils honoured in this gallery on the Time magazine site. Others with a remarkably casual self-preservation instinct include Alain Robert aka the French Spider-Man who climbs tall buildings without the aid of a harness and Ormer Locklear, a turn of the century "wing walker" who died during an aviation stunt in 1920.
