The Archbishop of Canterbury yesterday repeated his objections to the passage of a bill that would legalise gay marriage.

The Most Rev Justin Welby expressed "sadness and sorrow" for the way homosexuals had been treated by the Church in the past, but said the result of proposed legislation would be "confusion". The new marriage of the Bill, he said, would mean "marriage is abolished redefined and recreated" - and the institution "weakened".

The Archbishop added that the legislation failed "to understand that two things may be equal but different".
