That's a wrap! Twitter's 300 feminist sandwiches nails worst boyfriend on the Internet
A New York woman and her boyfriend drew the ire of the internet yesterday after the story of their sandwich-making romance, which involved her blogging a journey to make him 300 sandwiches, in return for a possible wedding ring, was shared around the web as an example of modern chauvinism.
Many couldn’t believe that the woman, Stephanie Smith – whose sandwiches were roundly praised – would willingly submit to an arrangement that seems old-fashioned at best and face-scrunchingly distasteful at worst.
She said: “Maybe I needed to show him I could cook to prove that I am wife material. If he wanted 300 sandwiches, I’d give him 300 sandwiches — and I’d blog about it.”
The boyfriend, Ed Schulte, quickly earned the soubriquet “Internet's worst boyfriend”. His words of wisdom include “sandwiches are love”, and “You women read all these magazines to get advice on how to keep a man, and it’s so easy. We’re not complex. Just do something nice for us. Like make a sandwich.”
Thankfully Twitter sprung off its haunches in response to the story and a hashtag, 300feministsandwiches, started to attract a swarm of suggestions for sandwiches that don’t come topped with a helping of patriarchal gender norms.
