Actor Derek Jacobi has urged readers to play their part and donate to The Independent's appeal for seriously ill children at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

The veteran Shakespearean, also known for his current role in BBC drama Last Tango in Halifax, highlighted the importance of spirituality at GOSH – a place where families often have to deal with desperate loss and trying times.

He made the appeal in the penultimate instalment of a 12 Days of Christmas series of celebrity endorsements for Give to GOSH.

“The chaplaincy and spiritual care team at Great Ormond Street Hospital provide multi-faith, spiritual and religious support to families, patients and staff all year round,” he said.

“Your donation to the Give to Gosh appeal could help contribute to this crucial service.”

Sir Ian McKellen, comic John Bishop and actress Gillian Anderson are among others to back the appeal with a direct video message.
