A former village post office and general store in the Kent countryside – built in the early 1800s – is for sale.

The four-bedroom Old Post Office is in Brenzett in Romney Marsh, an area that sits below sea level and is spread across Kent and East Sussex.

Romney Marsh is famed for its big skies, huge fields and isolated farms and villages. The area is home to the world’s smallest public railway, the largest shingle foreland in Britain and 14& medieval churches.

According to the Ingoldsby Legends – a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry printed in 1837 – “the world, according to the best geographers, is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Romney Marsh”. As a result, the area came to be known as the Fifth Continent.

Brenzett first appeared in the Domesday book of 1086 as Brensete – thought to mean 'burnt house' in old English.

The Old Post Office sits on a large plot and was converted into a residence in the early 2000s. Many of the original features have been kept, including exposed original brickwork and a huge rear lawn.

There's even an old red post box built into an outside wall – fortunately it's redundant, so the owners are no longer obliged to fulfill any postal duties.

There are three reception rooms (one opens out to a courtyard), a dining room and a lounge. One of the receptions could easily be converted into a fifth bedroom with ensuite, as it leads into its own modern shower room.

The main bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and a separate walk-in wardrobe, so storage won't be a problem.

There’s also a double garage and further ample parking to the rear. There's currently planning permission for the garage loft to be converted, should the new owners wish to use it as an office or even guest accommodation.

A large summer house with a decked area sits in the garden and there’s also a swimming pool that will keep the kids occupied during the long hot summers that are predicted in future years.

The property is listed for £620,000 with Yopa.
