Dermot O’Leary has revealed on This Morning that he has been experiencing “massively painful” temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, which caused him pain every time he tried to eat.
The presenter sought help from a physiotherapist after experiencing jaw pain and initially ignoring it, and was diagnosed with TMJ, a condition affecting the joint between the jawbone and temporal bone.
TMJ disorders can cause jaw, neck, and shoulder pain, and if untreated, may lead to early onset arthritis or jaw dislocation. Treatment options include massage, Botox injections or surgery.
Former Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball has also revealed she suffered from TMJ, sharing photos of herself before and after lymphatic drainage massage to ease the pain.
Experts recommend managing TMJ symptoms by eating softer foods, using over-the-counter pain medication, reducing jaw clenching, and applying hot or cold compresses.
