Emma Stone says shaving her head for a role reminded her of mother’s cancer treatment

Emma Stone's daughter is her 'greatest gift'
  • Emma Stone shaved her head for her role as Michelle in Yorgos Lanthimos's new sci-fi comedy, Bugonia, where her character is forced to do so by kidnappers.
  • Stone found the act brave, connecting it to her mother's experience with hair loss during cancer treatment, and expressed a desire to have shown off her bald head more.
  • Her close friend, Jennifer Lawrence, initially opposed the idea, recalling Stone's previous “Billie Jean King haircut,” but later admitted Stone “pulled it off” beautifully.
  • Stone had to hide her bald head under hats and wigs during filming, eventually debuting her new look, which was initially mistaken for a short pixie cut, at the 2025 Golden Globes after her hair had grown out.
  • Bugonia marks Stone's fifth collaboration with Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and is set for a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival before its cinema release on October 24.
