Friends star was ‘ready to go to battle’ over lesbian storyline
- Jane Sibbett, who played Carol on Friends, has reflected on the 1996 episode that featured the first lesbian wedding on primetime TV.
- In The One with the Lesbian Wedding, Carol, Ross’s ex-wife, marries Susan (Jessica Hecht) in a ceremony officiated by real-life LGBT+ activist Candace Gingrich.
- Sibbett expressed regret that the wedding scene omitted a kiss, because “it’s beautiful to see a kiss”.
- She also recalled defending the storyline on talk shows, where she went “toe to toe with people who were thumping their bibles at me”, saying “I was ready to go to battle for what I love”.
- Currently, Sibbett is working on a memoir about her work as an energy healer.
