Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their Santa Fe home along with one of their dogs.
Maintenance workers discovered the bodies and alerted authorities, noting they hadn't seen the couple in two weeks.
While initially deemed unsuspicious, the deaths are now considered "suspicious" due to an unsecured front door, scattered pills near Arakawa's body, and the state of decomposition.
No signs of struggle or forced entry were found, and the cause of death remains undetermined pending autopsy and toxicology reports.
Hackman's daughter suggested carbon monoxide poisoning, but initial tests didn't indicate a leak. Hackman retired from acting in 2004 due to heart health concerns.
