James Van Der Beek, who announced his Stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis last November, was forced to miss a Dawson's Creek reunion charity event due to two stomach viruses.
Despite his absence, Van Der Beek made a surprise virtual appearance via a pre-recorded clip, introducing Lin-Manuel Miranda as his replacement for the reading.
The event, organised by Michelle Williams, saw the original cast reunite at the Richard Rodgers Theatre for a live reading of the show's pilot episode.
The reunion aimed to raise money for the F Cancer charity and to support Van Der Beek amid his ongoing health battle.
Van Der Beek recently described living with Stage 3 colorectal cancer as a challenging 'journey' and a 'full-time job'.
