  • The iconic bag was first conceived in the 1980s when Birkin asked then-Hermès head Jean-Louis Damas for a larger, more practical bag for mothers.
  • After designing the bag in 1984 with dedicated space for baby bottles, Hermès named the item after Birkin with her consent.
