Train service connecting major cities in Europe axed

The Nightjet sleeper service connecting Paris to Vienna and Berlin is set to cease operations from December 2025.
SNCF Voyageurs announced the discontinuation, attributing it to the French Ministry of Transport's withdrawal of state subsidies for the service.
The train operator stated that night trains face a "huge economic challenge" due to high production costs, including increased personnel, infrastructure, and energy expenses.
Despite an average occupancy rate of 70 per cent in 2024, the service was deemed not economically viable without continued state support.
Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) expressed regret over the decision, and a French citizen collective has launched a petition to save the international night train routes.
