The best places to see the Northern Lights this week

  • Two Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are set to collide, forming a rare 'cannibal CME' before reaching our atmosphere.
  • This celestial event is forecast to produce spectacular auroras, known as the northern and southern lights, from Monday night until Wednesday night.
  • In the UK, the northern lights could be visible as far south as Birmingham, Norwich, East Anglia, the Midlands, and Wales.
  • The aurora borealis is also predicted to stretch as far south as Michigan, Montana, and New York in the US, with the aurora australis visible in southern Australia and New Zealand.
  • For optimal viewing, seek areas with low light pollution and clear skies, with early Tuesday morning (2 September) offering the best chance, though a waxing gibbous Moon may partly hinder visibility.
