Warning over pension mistake that could see your ex inherit your savings

  • One in six adults in relationships are unaware of who inherits their pension upon death, with that figure rising to one in five for those aged 79 and over.
  • Uncertainty is higher among cohabiting couples who are not married, with a quarter unsure about pension beneficiaries.
  • While 65 per cent of respondents to an Aviva survey on the subject named their partner/spouse as beneficiary, 20 per cent chose a family member.
  • Aviva stresses the importance of regularly reviewing and updating pension beneficiary information, saying this can often be easily done online.
  • Aviva’s managing director of direct wealth business Jo Phillips says some pension policies date back decades and it’s likely that many people will have been married, divorced and married again in the years since.
