  • U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is leading an initiative for the Food and Drug Administration to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the nation’s food supply, citing health concerns for children.
  • In response, 40 major ice cream producers, representing over 90 per cent of U.S. sales, have pledged to remove specific dyes like Red No. 3 and Yellow 5 from their dairy-based products by the end of 2027.
  • This commitment applies to ice creams sold in grocery stores, convenience stores, and online, but does not include non-dairy varieties or products from small businesses.
  • The Trump administration has also championed a broader effort to eliminate synthetic dyes from the food supply by the end of next year, aiming to improve public health.
  • Separately, Kraft Heinz has announced plans to remove all chemical dyes from its products by the end of 2027, building on its existing efforts to reduce artificial colours.
