Tesco is trialling in-store scanners in five of its stores to help customers assess avocado ripeness before purchase.
The scanners, developed by Dutch company One Third Avocado Scanner, indicate if an avocado is 'immediately ready for smashing' or 'better used to be sliced in a salad'.
This initiative aims to help shoppers choose the right avocado for their needs, thereby reducing food waste and assisting with meal planning.
Tesco has seen a significant increase in avocado sales, selling nearly 15 million more in the last year compared to the previous 52 weeks.
