Burnham denies asking MPs if he should try to oust Starmer as Labour leader
Chancellor Rachel Reeves said she would like to be “less in hock to the bond markets”, but the nation relies on them, in comments responding to Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.
Andy Burnham proposed the idea of “Manchesterism” as an “aspirational socialism”, and argued the country needs to move beyond being “in hock to the bond markets”, citing a loss of control over essential services.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticised Mr Burnham's policies, suggesting they would “harm” working people and comparing him to Liz Truss, stating there is “nothing progressive about abandoning fiscal rules”.
Sir Keir will tell Labour activists at the Liverpool conference that it is “not time” for infighting or introspection, urging a focus on the country's future.
Sir Keir indicated a potential willingness to lift the two-child benefit cap to reduce child poverty, and Ms Reeves supported a youth mobility scheme with the European Union, advocating for the OBR to assess its economic benefits.
