An Oklahoma family, led by Raynae Madison, unearthed a 2.79-carat chocolate brown diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas.
The discovery was made on September 13 using a beach digging kit and sand sifting tools during a weekend trip to celebrate her nephew William's birthday.
Madison initially doubted it was a diamond, stating she thought it was 'too big to be a diamond' due to its unusual size and appearance.
Park staff identified the stone, explaining that its brown hue results from plastic deformation during its formation.
Named the 'William Diamond' after her nephew, it is the third-largest of 403 gems registered at the park this year and could be worth thousands of dollars.
