California Governor Gavin Newsom is considering a plan to redraw the state's U.S. House maps, aiming to counter partisan redistricting efforts seen in Texas.
This proposal has drawn strong criticism from Arnold Schwarzenegger, who served as California's governor and established the state's current nonpartisan redistricting system.
Schwarzenegger's spokesperson stated he views gerrymandering as “truly evil” and opposes California adopting similar partisan tactics to those in Texas.
Newsom intends to put his proposal before voters on November's Uniform District Election ballot, requiring a two-thirds majority from the state Legislature.
If successful, Newsom's plan could dismantle a significant legacy of Schwarzenegger's tenure, with Schwarzenegger reportedly preparing to lead a campaign against it.
