Investigation after gynaecologist performs 21 C-sections in just 10 hours
The local administration issued a formal show-cause notice to the doctor – asking him to explain why he should not face disciplinary action
A senior gynaecologist in Assam, India, Dr Kantheswar Bordoloi, is under investigation after performing 21 emergency caesarean sections within a single shift at Morigaon Civil Hospital.
The local administration issued a formal show-cause notice to Dr Bordoloi, citing serious concerns about the safety and well-being of mothers and newborns, and inadequately maintained medical records.
The notice demanded detailed reports for each case, including information on sterilisation procedures, foetal distress, newborn care, and the roles of assisting medical staff.
Dr Bordoloi defended his actions, stating that handling multiple surgeries quickly is not unusual in India’s busy public hospitals and that all necessary medical procedures were followed.
He confirmed that 19 of the 21 mothers and newborns had been discharged in stable condition, with two remaining hospitalised, and suggested the complaint might have been personal.
