Bondi Beach suspect was investigated by police before he killed 15 people
Australian prime minister demands tougher gun laws after Bondi Beach attack
One of the gunmen involved in the Bondi Beach mass shooting, Naveed Akram, had previously been investigated for links to a Sydney-based Islamic State terrorism cell.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that Akram, 24, was investigated by Australia’s domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, for six months in 2019.
Counter-terrorism police believe Akram and his father, Sajid, 50, had pledged allegiance to the terror group, with two Isis flags reportedly discovered in their vehicle.
The incident, described as an antisemitic terrorist attack at a Chanukah event, resulted in at least 15 fatalities, including a 10-year-old girl.
Sajid Akram is thought to have been killed at the scene, while Naveed Akram sustained critical injuries and is in hospital under police guard, with at least 40 others receiving treatment.
