The Brotherhood of the Knights of Camembert has launched a cultural campaign in Normandy to protect the authenticity of Camembert cheese.
The group, dressed in medieval attire, is seeking Unesco recognition for the famed French fromage as an intangible cultural heritage.
This effort follows a French court ruling that barred mass-produced Camembert from being labelled 'made in Normandy' to safeguard traditional cheesemakers using unpasteurised milk.
Dominique Vignat, the grand master, stated that the initiative aims to protect Camembert's cultural heritage and know-how, helping consumers find the real product.
While Unesco does not list foods, it has previously recognised culinary practices passed down through generations, such as sake making and pizza twirling.
