  • The scheme would require a consultation and subsequent legislation to be implemented, drawing inspiration from Estonia's mandatory ID card system.
  • Eight civil liberties groups, including Big Brother Watch and Liberty, have warned that compulsory digital ID risks harming privacy, and could push unauthorised migrants further into the shadows.
  • Sir Keir is reportedly going to announce the plan in a speech on Friday.
