Former Labour MP gives tearful speech in House of Commons
Suspended over two-child benefit cap: Apsana Begum says treatment was ‘heartbreaking’
Independent MP Apsana Begum became emotional in the House of Commons while detailing an alleged campaign of harassment by her former partner.
Ms Begum urged employers and political parties to implement a duty of care to protect survivors of domestic abuse from further harassment in public life.
She described the impact of the ongoing harassment and "institutional gaslighting" as devastating and chilling.
Commons Leader Lucy Powell praised Ms Begum's bravery and confirmed an upcoming Elections Bill would address candidate suitability and behaviour.
Ms Begum's ex-husband, Ehtasham Haque, previously denied her allegations of domestic abuse in 2022.
