- Motorists could face a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT test failure if their number plates are incorrectly displayed or do not meet the required specifications.
- Key requirements include plates being made from reflective material, displaying black characters on a white front and yellow rear background, and having no background pattern.
- Number plates fitted after 1 September 2021 must feature characters in a single shade of black and be marked with the British Standard number BS AU 145e.
- While certain features like raised 3D characters, specific flags, and a green flash for zero-emission vehicles are permitted, altering characters to make them hard to read is strictly prohibited.
