The growing problem with e-bikes and e-scooters

  • Electric bikes and scooters are causing significant fear and anxiety for blind and partially sighted people, making streets a "nightmare" due to obstruction.
  • A report by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) reveals that only 9 per cent of blind people feel confident walking in their own neighbourhood.
  • The survey found that 92 per cent of blind or partially sighted individuals are forced to walk into roads because pavements are obstructed by parked vehicles, including e-scooters and e-bikes.
  • The RNIB is calling for the government to create "inclusive standards" for pavements and for local authorities to better regulate rental e-scooter and e-bike schemes.
  • The Department for Transport stated that safety is a top priority, with new powers being introduced to regulate e-scooters and e-bikes to tackle reckless parking.
