Emirates will ban the use of phone power banks on its flights from 1 October due to safety concerns regarding fires, explosions, and toxic gases.
Passengers may still carry one power bank onboard, provided it has capacity information and is stored in the seat pocket or under the seat, but its use is strictly prohibited.
The airline stated that the new regulation is a response to a significant increase in lithium battery-related incidents observed across the wider aviation industry.
Emirates' decision follows similar restrictions implemented by several Asian airlines and Southwest Airlines in the US, which have also experienced overheating incidents.
Aviation authorities, including the UK Civil Aviation Authority, advise that lithium batteries and power banks should be carried in carry-on baggage and be completely turned off to minimise fire risks.
