Briton receives huge payout after being sacked for remote work in Egypt

British boss found to be working remotely from Egypt was unfairly sacked, tribunal rules
  • A British sales manager, Tanveer Shah, was awarded £61,419 in compensation after an employment tribunal ruled his dismissal was unfair.
  • Shah, a UK field sales manager for Foodhub, was found to be working remotely from Egypt for an unspecified period, despite his role requiring him to be 'in the field' four days a week.
  • His CEO, Ardian Mula, dismissed him on the spot in August after confronting him about his lack of expenses and suspected remote working, accusing him of 'illegitimately taking a salary'.
  • The tribunal judge, David Maxwell, highlighted 'fundamental flaws' in the company's investigation into Shah's conduct, noting that HR had advised the CEO on correct procedures after the initial dismissal.
  • Shah had previously been a 'high performer' but his claim of being stuck in Egypt due to Covid after a holiday was met with scepticism by the judge due to a 'surprising gap' in his memory.
