  • Facebook has deleted over 10 million accounts as part of an ongoing purge of its social network.
  • The company said the action is aimed at cracking down on “spammy” content and promoting authentic accounts, with over one million accounts removed monthly in the first half of 2025.
  • Many legitimate users have reported their accounts being wrongly deleted, with some blaming artificial intelligence systems for misidentifying them as inauthentic.
  • Referred to as the 'Meta ban wave', the mass deletions have also impacted Instagram accounts, which is also owned by Meta.
  • Affected users receive an email notification and have 180 days to appeal any account suspension before their profile is permanently deleted.
