  • Millions of Americans are starting to receive payouts from a landmark $725 million privacy class-action settlement with Facebook.
  • The settlement addresses claims that Facebook improperly shared user data with third parties, including the controversial Cambridge Analytica firm, which was used by Donald Trump in 2016 during his first run for president.
  • Payouts officially commenced on 3 September and will be distributed over a 10-week period, following delays caused by legal appeals.
  • Around 17 million eligible claimants will receive varying amounts, with an estimated average payout of $30, calculated via a point system based on the duration of their Facebook account.
  • The settlement drew a record 28 million claims, with the eight lead plaintiffs each receiving $15,000, while the lawyers in the case will benefit the most, receiving $181 million.
