Warning Farage’s migrant plan would lead to crippling labour shortages
Welfare benefits for UK citizens only under Reform, Farage says
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has announced plans to abolish indefinite leave to remain (ILR) for new applicants, claiming the current system has "betrayed democracy".
Farage said that this policy would generate substantial savings, exceeding £230bn, and claimed that half of the targeted migrants are not working.
However, the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) said its £230bn savings figure should no longer be used, and experts questioned Farage's statistics on migrant employment.
Migration charities, think tanks, and the care industry widely condemned the proposals as an "unworkable stunt based on dodgy maths", warning of severe economic disruption and crippling labour shortages.
Critics also pointed out that the plans would exempt EU citizens from a proposed benefits ban, limiting its impact on Universal Credit claimants, and would undermine the security of those legally settled in the UK.
