President Trump's Justice Department sought the indictment of James Comey, the ex-FBI director, on charges of making a false statement to Congress and obstructing proceedings.
The charges relate to Comey's 2020 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning the FBI's investigation into alleged ties between Trump and Russia.
Fox News legal expert Andrew McCarthy expressed doubt about the case's credibility, arguing the indictment is based on the false premise that Comey authorised a leak.
McCarthy clarified that ex-FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe informed Comey about a leak to The Wall Street Journal after it occurred, rather than Comey authorising it beforehand.
Pundit Howard Kurtz suggested the indictment was orchestrated by President Trump, noting the replacement of a US attorney to ensure the case was brought forward.
