California Governor Gavin Newsom challenged Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, to arrest him after Homan threatened to apprehend anyone interfering with ICE's crackdown on illegal immigration in Los Angeles.
Newsom accused Trump of "manufacturing a crisis" and "inflaming conditions" by sending the National Guard to assist local law enforcement during protests against ICE arrests.
Newsom criticised Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for provoking violence, militarising cities, and arresting opponents, likening their actions to those of a dictator.
Trump retaliated on Truth Social, calling Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass "incompetent" and criticizing their handling of the unrest and wildfires.
ICE operations in Los Angeles County have resulted in 118 arrests of accused illegal immigrants, amid clashes between protesters and law enforcement involving tear gas and fireworks.
