Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede, has publicly rejected President Trump's suggestion that the US could acquire the island, saying: “Greenland is ours.”
Trump, during a speech to Congress, expressed his desire to acquire Greenland while simultaneously supporting its right to self-determination.
Trump's comments have caused concern and offence on the Arctic island, where many view his statements as a threat to their autonomy.
Denmark's Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, expressed optimism that Greenlanders would choose to maintain their ties with Denmark.
The issue of full independence from Denmark has gained significant attention in Greenland's parliamentary election campaign following Trump's remarks.
