Prisons ‘more dangerous than ever’ – former officer

HMP Frankland in Durham
HMP Frankland in Durham (PA Wire)
  • A former colleague of the prison officers who were attacked at HMP Frankland on the weekend is warning that jails are now more dangerous for staff than ever.
  • Three prison officers were seriously injured in the attack, allegedly by Manchester bomb plotter Hashem Abedi, using hot oil and homemade weapons.
  • The attack came on the same weekend as a separate incident at HMP Whitemoor, where a prisoner was killed.
  • The former officer says those incidents are “just the tip of the iceberg” and many attacks go unreported.
  • The Ministry of Justice has launched an independent review into the HMP Frankland attack and suspended prisoner access to kitchens in separation and close supervision units.
