Ice cream van traders could face new restrictions

Ice cream vans could face 12 second chime rule and 15-minute trading limit
  • South Cambridgeshire District Council is considering new regulations for ice cream vans following complaints about “illegal or unauthorised” sellers.
  • Proposed changes include limiting the duration of chimes to 12 seconds and restricting their playing times to between 12pm and 7pm.
  • Chimes would also be prohibited within 50 metres of schools during school hours, hospitals, and places of worship.
  • New rules would require traders to obtain permission from nearby schools before selling in their vicinity and impose a 15-minute trading limit in approved locations.
  • A consultation is expected after councillors supported the changes, with other councils highlighting risks associated with unregulated vans and food hygiene.
