The White House is reportedly backing a plan for former prime minister Sir Tony Blair to head a temporary administration in the Gaza Strip.
The proposed body, named the Gaza International Transitional Authority (Gita), would act as the supreme political and legal authority for up to five years.
Modelled on transitions in Timor-Leste and Kosovo, Gita would initially exclude the Palestinian Authority but aims for eventual unification of all Palestinian territory under the PA.
The plan, which reportedly has the full support of US President Donald Trump, suggests Gita could be based in el-Arish, Egypt, and supported by an Arab multinational force endorsed by the UN.
Sir Tony’s potential involvement is controversial due to his legacy from the 2003 Iraq invasion.
