The Vatican said U.S. Vice President JD Vance and its Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin discussed “countries affected by war, political tensions and difficult humanitarian situations, with particular attention to migrants, refugees, and prisoners”.
The meeting follows Pope Francis' criticism of the Trump administration's migrant policies, which Vance has defended using Catholic theology.
The Vatican and the U.S. administration hold differing views on migration, with Pope Francis emphasising the dignity of migrants.
Vance, a recent Catholic convert, identifies with a conservative Catholic intellectual movement sometimes labelled "postliberal."
While in Rome for Easter, Vance attended Good Friday services at St. Peter's Basilica with his family.
