Lisbon’s iconic Gloria cable car derails in tourist district
Three British nationals are among the 16 people dead after the Gloria funicular derailed and crashed into a building in Lisbon, Portugal.
More than 20 people were injured in the incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, with seven remaining in serious condition.
Among the deceased were the funicular's brake guard, Andre Jorge Goncalves Marques, a former volleyball referee, and a lawyer.
Officials confirmed that victims included Portuguese, Canadian, German, Ukrainian, and American nationals.
Portugal's Prime Minister Luís Montenegro declared a day of national mourning, and investigations have been launched into the cause of the crash, with initial reports suggesting the cable came loose.
