Delays expected for London travellers amid Underground strikes
Rail fare dodger or simply bamboozled by train ticketing ‘system’? Simon Calder explains
Commuters in London face significant disruption as the RMT union announced a week of strike action on the Underground and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) starting early next month.
The industrial action begins with a 24-hour walkout by some RMT members at the Ruislip depot from 6pm on Friday 5 September, followed by daily phased walkouts across the Tube network from Sunday 7 September.
The RMT union stated the strikes are due to London Underground (LU) management's failure to address demands concerning pay, fatigue management, extreme shift patterns, and a reduction in the working week.
Transport for London (TfL) has countered that a reduction in the contractual 35-hour working week is neither practical nor affordable, despite offering a 3.4 per cent pay increase.
The strikes will impact all Underground lines except the Elizabeth line and London Overground, and will also affect the DLR, causing widespread travel misery for Londoners.
