London Underground strikes: Week of action announced aimed at paralysing capital’s transport system
Delays expected for London travellers amid Underground strikes
- Commuters in London face significant disruption as the RMT union announced a week of strike action on the Underground and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) starting early next month.
- The industrial action begins with a 24-hour walkout by some RMT members at the Ruislip depot from 6pm on Friday 5 September, followed by daily phased walkouts across the Tube network from Sunday 7 September.
- The RMT union stated the strikes are due to London Underground (LU) management's failure to address demands concerning pay, fatigue management, extreme shift patterns, and a reduction in the working week.
- Transport for London (TfL) has countered that a reduction in the contractual 35-hour working week is neither practical nor affordable, despite offering a 3.4 per cent pay increase.
- The strikes will impact all Underground lines except the Elizabeth line and London Overground, and will also affect the DLR, causing widespread travel misery for Londoners.
