Brexit made tackling illegal migration harder, says Macron
Macron blames Brexit for migration crisis as new deal announced with Starmer
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer unveiled a "one in, one out" migrant returns scheme on Thursday, 10 July 2025.
Macron stated that Brexit has made it harder to tackle illegal migration across the Channel due to the UK's lack of a migratory agreement with the EU.
He added that this situation creates an incentive for migrants to attempt crossings, which is the opposite of what Brexit had promised.
The agreed plan involves sending back small boat migrants, with an asylum seeker being sent to the UK in exchange.
