A new study suggests that sustainable meat consumption is limited to 255 grams (9 ounces) of poultry or pork per week, equivalent to two chicken breasts.
This amount is significantly less than the current average consumption and highlights the environmental impact of livestock farming, which contributes to 15 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Even moderate beef consumption is considered unsustainable due to its higher environmental footprint compared to poultry and pork.
Plant-based diets (Vegetarian, Vegan, pescetarian) are identified as more sustainable options.
The study emphasises the need for clearer guidelines and public frameworks to promote sustainable food choices, suggesting that balanced diets incorporating dairy, eggs, fish, or white meat can also be sustainable if the overall diet is healthy and environmentally conscious.
