Finnuala, Tadhg and Wubbo among new Met Office storm names
Planes struggle to land in high winds as Storm Floris batters parts of UK
The UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands have unveiled the latest list of storm names for the upcoming winter season, compiled from over 50,000 public suggestions.
The Met Office, Met Eireann, and KNMI collaborate on the naming system, which aims to enhance public awareness, encourage preparation, and ensure safety during severe weather events.
Many of the chosen names, such as Amy, Dave, Isla, and Violet, reflect personal tributes to loved ones or pets.
Storms are given a name when they are expected to cause medium or high impacts in the UK, Ireland, or the Netherlands, primarily focusing on wind but also considering rain or snow.
Meteorologists emphasise that naming storms significantly raises public awareness and prompts action, a crucial tool as climate change contributes to more extreme weather and increased flood risks.
