- Ms Peet, who has written for The Independent and Al Jazeera, had been out of contact with her family voluntarily since early February.
- She reportedly told a friend on 8 February that she was in Sao Paulo and planning to go to Rio de Janeiro before disappearing.
- A missing person report was filed on 17 February, and the Brazilian Foreign Press Association expressed concern for her safety.
- Police stated that Ms Peet does not want contact with her family, and the case has been closed.
