Eli Lilly is set to almost triple the price of its weight-loss drug Mounjaro in the UK from 1 September, increasing a month's supply of the highest dose from £122 to £330 on private prescriptions.
The price hike is causing private patients to switch to the competitor drug Ozempic, with sales of the latter reportedly surging by 500 to 600 per cent.
Eli Lilly said the price adjustment is to align with other countries and enable lower prices in the US, following concerns raised by Donald Trump's administration about medication costs abroad.
Trump previously highlighted the disparity in drug prices, citing a friend's experience of paying £88 for weight-loss medication in London compared to $1,300 in New York.
NHS patients prescribed Mounjaro will not be affected by the price rise as the health service has negotiated a discount.
