Mountaineer, 102, explains why he climbed Mount Fuji yet again

Mount Fuji's first snowcap of the season comes almost a month early
  • Kokichi Akuzawa, a 102-year-old man, has set a new Guinness World Record as the oldest person to summit Mount Fuji in Japan.
  • He reached the 3,776-metre peak on 5 August, completing the ascent over three days via the Yoshida Trail.
  • Akuzawa's remarkable feat followed a series of health setbacks, including a fall, shingles, and hospitalisation for heart failure.
  • Mr Akuzawa shared he was a seasoned mountaineer but remarked his latest climb “was tough, and it felt a lot different to the last time I climbed it”.
  • His 75-year-old daughter, Yukiko, noted his determination despite family concerns about his physical condition.
