Floodwater gushes into New York city subway station amid heavy rainfall
Two women died in Plainfield, New Jersey, after being swept off a road and trapped in their car during severe flash flooding on Monday night.
The unnamed women are believed to have drowned as rescuers were unable to reach their vehicle due to the ferocity of the storm.
Both New Jersey and New York states declared a state of emergency as the severe storms battered the region, causing widespread disruption.
The flash flooding also impacted New York City, where parts of the subway system were inundated, and dozens of flights were delayed or cancelled at area airports.
By Tuesday morning, the subway system was fully operational, though some roads remained closed across both states as recovery efforts continued.
