Kim Jong Un inaugurated the Wonsan Kalma beach resort on North Korea’s east coast, marking a significant step in his plan to promote tourism.
The extensive resort in Wonsan, Kangwon province, features housing, hotels, and facilities designed to accommodate nearly 20,000 guests. It also has facilities for sea swimming, sports and recreation.
Tourism serves as one of the few legal avenues for North Korea to generate foreign currency, given that most of its economic activities are restricted by UN sanctions.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Russia’s ambassador in Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un, his daughter Kim Ju Ae, and his wife Ri Sol Ju.
Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction with the project and announced intentions to develop more large-scale tourist areas, with the Kalma resort serving as the initial phase for cultural tourism.
