A new digital pay-as-you-go (PAYG) ticketing system has been launched on the rail line between Leeds and Harrogate, operated by Northern.
Passengers use a mobile app to tap in and out, with GPS tracking their journey, and the system automatically calculates the lowest applicable fare at the end of the day.
The initiative aims to modernise ticketing, simplify fares, remove the need for pre-planning, and encourage more people to choose rail travel.
First adopters on the Leeds-Harrogate route are being offered a £15 credit, following a successful trial earlier this month in the East Midlands.
The Department for Transport hopes to expand this system for commuter journeys into major cities to reduce costs and enhance the appeal of rail.
